![]() 8 Chinese Horses $58.00 "When the horses arrive, success is assured" so goes a proverb. These are very special figures. A company in China found them hidden in a warehouse. They are from the 1920s and have the beautiful colors of that period. I bought these for nostalgic reasons. When I was first starting out in sandplay I saw these horses (in blue) in so many trays. All the teachers I admired had them. They are not so easy to find these days. I am thinking of reproducing them myself next year. This set is very special however and I’m keeping them on my desk! The number 8 brings good fortune. And when you combine this number with the horses it will symbolize strength, perseverance, and success in the Chinese tradition. Set of 8 hand glazed ceramic antique horses 2 ½." |
Poseidon $6.50 In Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea, as well as of horses and, as "Earth-Shaker," of earthquakes. The name of the sea-god Nethuns in Etruscan was adopted in Latin for Neptune in Roman mythology; both were sea gods analogous to Poseidon. Poseidon is credited for creating the first horse. In his benign aspect, Poseidon was seen as creating new islands and offering calm seas. When offended or ignored, he supposedly struck the ground with his trident and caused chaotic springs, earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks. In the Odyssey Poseidon's grudge against the protagonist prevented him from coming home to Ithaca. Sailors prayed to Poseidon for a safe voyage, sometimes drowning horses as a sacrifice. Like Dionysus, who inflamed the maenads, Poseidon also caused certain forms of mental disturbance. A Hippocratic text of ca 400 BCE, On the Sacred Disease[1] says that he was blamed for certain types of epilepsy. Psychologically he can represent the deepest layers of the soul (sea = unconscious). Plastic, 4" tall.

![]() Mermaid with Conch $6.50 A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish.. The mermaid is an almost universal symbol. The Mermaid often carries a mirror to symbolize self knowledge. She represents the element of Water or the unconscious, sometimes wisdom of the unconscious, sometimes a monster of the unconscious. Much like sirens, mermaids in stories would sometimes sing to sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or cause shipwrecks. Other stories would have them squeeze the life out of drowning men while trying to rescue them. They are also said to take them down to their underwater kingdoms Like many creatures from mythology and folklore, mermaids appear regularly in popular media. One of the most ubiquitous images is surely the Disney character based on the tale by Andersen. In Disney the two-fold nature of mermaids is exploited to tell a coming-of-age story in which the sea represents childhood and land represents adult life--a place where one stands on one's "own two feet." For most of the story the adolescent heroine is torn between the two worlds. The mermaid can also represent something non-existent as in J. Donne, "Teach me to hear Mermaids singing." Plastic, 4" tall.
